For those who are married, the symbol of the ring bears more than a signal to the larger world of a social status. It is a reminder of this commitment to be as the warrior - to stay present, regardless of what comes up, available to respond to what is before us. As a circle, the ring is both masculine and feminine. Each unique ring encompasses all - a beautiful and symbolic gift we share and serves to remind us all.

When I ponder staying in relationship, I am also reminded of one definition of the warrior. Angeles Arrien, PhD and cultural anthropologist outlines the Way of the Warrior in her book, “The Four Fold Way”. Unlike the commercialized version of a warrior, with weaponry and physical prowess, there is a universal alternative expression of this modality. The primary tenant of warriorship? Showing up.

Yes, this view states that to be a warrior one simply must bring the power of Presence. Being present, in this regard, seems to be about not shying away from conflict or discomfort but staying available to what arises within ourselves and in the spaces between ourselves and our partners, spouses, friends, colleagues and families. Can’t you feel the fiercely potent energy of a warrior in this framework? Haven’t you felt that power, when faced with someone who holds the willingness to show up and be present to what truly is?
