The other day, I came across a phrase in my inbox, “staying in relationship”. What does this mean? First, I notice the courage, the fierce commitment to being present, and allowing what comes up - without hiding or deceiving. Staying in relationship evokes a willingness to keep communicating, a fortitude of strength for being seen, being seen. That this phrase would be used a potent title (as I encountered it), says something to me about the challenge of our time.
I read this as a call to keep standing firm, even when things get hard. To take a stance of engagement; and not disengagement, which withers toward apathy. As someone who sees the profoundly large scale played out in the small scale, I wonder what fantastic set of qualities allows some to ‘stay in relationship’? Could these be the very qualities that might transform institutions, organizations and even nations?
