Sometimes, it is the vastness of a color scheme that makes the biggest impact in a home. Other times, it’s the little touches. Here are the things I’ve seen that have totally surprised and delighted me. The touches that I just hadn’t considered where possible in making a space a joy to live in…
• Someone took old maps, cut them up and mounted them on circular chipboard (of varying sizes) to make a banner of roads and places. So delightful!
• I have seen people take glass ornaments and string them vertically by fishing line and rest it against a wall. It was festive in a year-round way.
• In a tiny home, someone bought an old glass window and hand-lettered the word OFFICE right on its glass. This hung from the ceiling and helped delineate a space, while keeping a flow beneath - and making it more official-looking in an artsy way.
• I visited a treehouse where someone had taken antique magazines (from the 1920’s) and plastered intriguing images and words on the walls around windows. It added to the ethereal feel of a space designed to take you away from the day-to-day world.
• In a small window sill facing the front door, someone collected a range of colorful glass bottles. They looked so enchanting just as they were - a tall, red piece - a wider blue item - an amber yellow with unique shape. It’s own mini-gallery!
• For those with kids, a cloth tent in a room or strategically designed fort-like curtain is such a gem. I was amazed at how a bright blue cloth over a play space - with string lighting above - created a camping feel, complete with the feeling of universe and stars above.
• Another favorite, that I have not seen but only heard, was a quirky father was put a whole antique bike frame up on the fireplace mantle and hung photos of loved ones from its metal angles.
