How do we know when something is “right”? There are dozens of ways to make decisions, and many, many ways of knowing. Some say we feel it in our gut. Some say that knowing comes in a flash, undeniable. Don’t we all love those stories in love, where one or both are struck with a strong sense of Knowing right at the onset.

What is this knowing? Today, I am considering the rightness of a life force and when we either do or don’t recognize its presence. How about you? Is there some memory that arises when you think of this Knowing? Maybe a career move, or a certain home, or a partnership that would last. There are just a few absolute realities in the natural world that are undeniable. The season change. Birth, growth and death. Gravity. Yet, I would also say that renewal and expansion are also reliables. The other day, I walked an alley in an artsy district of Vancouver, British Columbia. Painted on the cement wall was what I considered a very enlightened form of graffiti. It said, “Relax, the universe is expanding.”

Indeed, this gave me hope! Don’t worry, there are infinite possibilities, and more all the time. So, when one possibility fizzles out, we can count on that something more to bring rightness. I am also reminded of the expression, “right as rain”. I wonder about this. While I don’t know the true historical origins of the expression, maybe it speaks to just these undeniable, reliable forces. Yes, water moves and gravity brings it to us.

I wonder now too, if those with a great love for water have a deep, even cellular understanding of this rightness.
