I am so enchanted with the neurobiology of how actual contact with soil positively enhances our wellbeing. I don’t have the science handy, but I know it has been associated with improved immune function and the accumulating of trace minerals. I also just think of evolution - if humans existed for thousands and thousands of years with daily physical contact with soil, it must be a core part of our collective, historical health.
The other week, I got to revisit the growing of food with a friend. I spent, I don’t even know how long, helping to plant basil starts. Time seemed irrelevant. We laid out the little babies in long rows in a greenhouse, and separated their roots to prepare them to draw nutrients up and into their bodies. Then, we planted. All that movement, the smells of damp soil, the cool, reassurance of gritty texture on bare feet… it nourished me.
Knowing we would eventually enjoy the fruits of this labor was a very distant thought. Though, perceiving the full cycle was likely part of the joy. I know many will garden in shoes and gloves and still reap the benefits. Our senses are so Alive in the process. I noticed that conversation was deeper and more inspired as we moved along. Here’s to all those scientists who help prove why it is so good for us!
With the fall season, we have a chance to savor the bounty of gardens and farms in their full glory: all that early gardeners have waited for. I would say it is worthwhile, as well, to start looking toward a next growing season, and how to encourage more quality time with the soil. A gift for gardeners, whether it is a nearby bench that allows us to enjoy our rest times there as well - or stones that beckon us in and onward to a space where we rarely travel. Let’s remember all we receive, in health, in the very moments of tending and touching the ground that literally supports us.
